USHAKA MARINE WORLD EMPLOYEES ENGAGE IN INDUSTRIAL ACTION

The eThekwini Municipality entity, uShaka Marine World has over the last few months been engaged in salary increase negotiations with the union representing the bargaining unit employees.  Unfortunately, the parties have not been able to come to a settlement and this led to the matter being referred to the Commision for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitrarion (CCMA) for intervention.  Despite the employer’s best endeavours, the parties could not come to an agreement.

This has led to the union opting to exercise its constitutional right in terms of the Labour Relations Act, by declaring an industrial action in a form of a strike as well as picketing outside the park premises.  The 48 hours’ notice to strike was given to the employer by the union today, 9 February.

The uShaka Marine World respects the constitutional right of employees to strike as they deem it appropriate under the circumstances.  The employees are also expected to exercise their rights peacefully in accordance with the law and to respect the employees who have opted not to participate in the industrial action.

The entity is committed to providing quality guest experience and the commencement of the industrial action will have an impact on our ability to deliver on this promise.  In light of this, the entity has considered the business risks and has resolved to close the park to the public effective Monday, 12 February 2024 for the corresponding period of the industrial action.

The entity apologises for any inconvenience caused. This approach is considered the best option in the interest and safety of our guests and stakeholders.

The entity undertakes to keep all stakeholders updated on developments regarding this matter.
