A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE AND GROWTH

Title: A Journey of Resilience and Growth: Nurturing Passion for Agriculture By Rohinee Kalideen Govender.

Throughout my life, I have been naturally drawn to the realm of agriculture, finding solace amidst the ceaseless bustle of daily existence. It is within this domain that I have discovered an indomitable affection for cultivating sustainable and economically viable gardens for the benefit of my local communities. Nurturing this ardour for agriculture has allowed me to accomplish numerous feats, including my tenure at the esteemed Rainman Landcare Foundation, my expansion into the field of education, my receipt of accolades, and my triumph over the obstacles encountered along my journey.During my time at the Rainman Landcare Foundation in South Africa, I had the privilege of playing an integral role in the organization’s commendable efforts in environmental conservation and sustainable land management. Together with a dedicated team, we worked tirelessly to safeguard the environment through a range of initiatives. One of our notable achievements was the successful restoration of degraded ecosystems in multiple regions across the country. Through meticulous rehabilitation and preservation of critical habitats, we were able to make a significant impact on the environment. After my tenure at the Rainman Landcare Foundation, I transitioned into the field of education by joining a private school located in the Upper Highway area. This new chapter in my career proved to be immensely rewarding, as I accomplished notable achievements. I meticulously devised a comprehensive curriculum for students spanning from kindergarten to grade 12, which effectively incorporated the garden as a core component in every lesson we shared. This pivotal experience afforded me the opportunity to explore and engage with projects that had previously captivated my interest, such as the Eduplant Emerging Schools and Eduplant Advanced Schools competitions on a national scale. I am pleased to share that we emerged victorious in both endeavors. Furthermore, we actively participated in the nationwide Glass Recycling Competition, where we secured the esteemed position of first runner-up.Following my departure from my position as an educator, I came across a new opportunity in the field of poultry production. This venture allowed me to expand my horizons and delve into chicken farming. Initially, I started with a small-scale operation, utilizing a modestly sized room to house a flock of only 50 chicks. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, I recognized the potential for my chicken production to contribute to the welfare of my community. As a result, I began to establish connections and gradually expanded my production capacity to accommodate approximately 200 chicks at a time.I encountered a significant challenge during the Durban floods, which resulted in the complete destruction of my entire garden. The damage sustained was extensive, rendering all the vegetables unusable and causing the beds to be completely ruined. Witnessing the destruction of the fruits of my labor and the countless hours invested was truly disheartening. Nonetheless, I refused to succumb to despair and instead channeled my determination toward rebuilding my garden. Through sheer perseverance, I managed to reconstruct it even better than its previous state. However, another setback came in the form of the fire season, which once again wreaked havoc on my garden. The sudden outbreak of veld fires resulted in the complete annihilation of everything I had cultivated. Overwhelmed by devastation and the news that the farm had been sold, I contemplated whether to redirect my focus and skills elsewhere. Yet, driven by self-awareness and a deep sense of purpose, I refused to let go.Undeterred by the challenges I had faced, I embarked on a search for a new farm near Inchanga. Determined to make a positive impact on my community, I reconstructed my farm on a grander scale. The increased size allowed me to produce a substantial quantity of vegetables, which I commenced selling on a weekly basis at the esteemed Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market. It is within this vibrant market that I forged an even stronger connection with the residents of the Upper Highway community. Their unwavering support has truly left me in awe, and it fills my heart with immense joy to have the opportunity to share my passion for fresh, organic vegetables with others who are equally enthusiastic consumers. My journey in agriculture has been one of resilience, growth, and unwavering determination. From my contributions to environmental conservation to empowering future generations through education, and overcoming personal setbacks, I have discovered the transformative power of cultivating sustainable gardens. As I continue to nurture my passion for agriculture, I remain dedicated to making a positive impact on my community and inspiring others to embrace the beauty and possibilities that lie within the realm of sustainable farming. Every little positive step helps to feed our nation. Farming for me is a deep passion.i wish to share my knowledge and see many new young farmers emerge.
